Morans In The Corporate World
I've worked at a huge corporate entity for the past 15 years. I have no college education, and yet was one of the lucky ones, moving my way up with my inherent technical and analytical skills.
Of course I have the typical gripes about politics, idiot micro-managers, and a depressing corporate environment in general. But my gripe today is more about the stupidity which is abundant amongst the peons.
I recently waited weeks for an administrator of a certain application to complete a configuration for my team. I finally requested access to perform the updates myself. This guy, who I already knew to be rather 'unskilled' for his position, gave me the rights, and came over to my cube to explain what I would have to do to complete the task. He fumbled around, and finally stated that this was a new version, and he'd have to get back to me to explain the procedure.
I immediately went into help, memorized a few techniques, and then messaged the guy, saying that I had found what I needed, and he didn't need to waste his time. He immediately ran over to my cube and said, "OK, let's see what damage you're about to cause". He went on to say that I was going to have to manually enter hundreds of changes because of the way the tool worked. I said, "No. Look at this. I'm able to do it this way."
Looking more than a little disgruntled, he acknowledged and departed. The smirk on my face revealed both my satisfaction and disbelief.
I could recount dozens of similar situations which occur on a daily basis, and lead me to question this company's ability to even stay afloat. Who hires these idiots, and how do they get away with taking months to do something that I could do in a week?
Most people want to escape the corporate world because of the commute, the management, the politics, and the 9 to 5 grind. My gripe . . . the peons. Better put . . the stupid peons.
